Irene and Ron Malachowsky, the founders of Blue Ridge Aikido & Yoga, LLC, located at the foothills of the Appalachian Trail, are dedicated to sharing these Eastern traditions in a supportive environment that nurtures each student's uniqueness. We offer classes in an unhurried approach providing individual attention to the various skill levels to enable each student the opportunity to experience the joy of movement and achieve optimal levels of fitness from their practice of these healing arts. Irene is certified by Lighten Up Yoga Teacher Training Institute, an intensive course based in the Iyengar Method, registered with the National Yoga Alliance. Irene was very influenced by Eric Small and completed his Adaptive Yoga Program for people living with multiple sclerosis. She is further certified through the completion of her study of the art and science of yoga with Anna Pitman. Under Anna's direction, Irene completed her second 500 hour program. Irene's strong inner desire to bring the healing art of yoga into the medical setting led her to study at the Integral Yoga Institute where she completed an Advanced Teacher Training in Cardiac Yoga with Dr. Mala Cunningham and Osteoporosis, Yoga and Bone Building with Kay Hawkins and Dr. Nirmala Limaye. Irene is a Registered Nurse with the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness Center at Lewis-Gale Hospital where she facilitates stress recovery programs based on the principles of Cardiac Yoga. She is thankful to family and friends and to the students and teachers, especially Gabriel Halpern, they continue to inspire her to move confidently in the directions of her dreams.
Sensei Ron Malachowsky, Nidan began studying the martial art of aikido in 1995 under the tutelage of Sensei Chris Gaston with the Roanoke Budo Kai where he practiced as part of an independent group. He then received shodan in 1999 and that year Ron along with his wife Irene moved to Troutville to enjoy the AT Trail across the street. Then in 2007, under Sensei Aviv Goldsmith, Dojo Cho of Aikido of Fredericksburg. Ron was promoted to nidan and continues to attend seminars and training sessions in the Fredericksburg/Richmond areas. He has also practiced yoga for 18 years and incorporates its principles into his aikido practice. Sensei Malachowsky is a member of the TAA (Takemusu Aikido Association) which is recognized by the Aikido World Headquarters (Aikikai Hombu) in Japan.
